MOUNT KILIMANJARO

One can successfully climb Kilimanjaro through various routes such as Marangu, Machame, Rongai, Umbwe and Lemosho Route.

Each route varies in the number of day of the climb and also the level of difficulty.

MARANGU ROUTE

Why Marangu Route:

  • Minimum of days to be trekked is 5 days
  • Accommodation in Huts instead of Camping
  • Acclimatization is poor, due to 5 days climb
  • People traffic is high
  • Price range is one of the cheapest routes

Recommended:

  • 6 Days climb for better acclimatization and increase success rate

Itinerary:

Day 1: Drive to Marangu Gate, begin ascent to Mandara Hut. High of destination: 2715m, 7 Kms, 3-4 Hours walk.

Day 2: Ascent from Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut. High of destination: 3705m, 11 Kms, 5-7 Hours walk.

Day 3: Ascent from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut. High of destination: 4730m, 12 Kms, 6-7 Hours walk.

Day 4: Ascent from Kibo Hut, summit Uhuru Peak then descent to Horombo Hut. High of destination: 5895m, 21 Kms, 10-12 Hours walk.

Day 5: Descent from Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate. High of destination: 1860m, 18 Kms, 4-5 Hours walk.

MACHAME ROUTE

Why Machame Route:

  • Minimum of days to be trekked is 6 days
  • Accommodation is Camping
  • More scenic
  • Acclimatization is very good
  • People traffic is very high
  • Price is mid-range

Recommended:

  • 7 Days climb for better acclimatization and increase success rate

Itinerary:

Day 1: Drive to Machame Gate, the begin ascent to Machame Camp. High of destination: 2980m, 9 Kms, 5-6 Hours walk.

Day 2: Ascent from Machame Camp to Shira Camp. High of destination: 3840m, 7 Kms, 4-5 Hours walk.

Day 3: Ascent from Shira Camp to Barranco Camp. High of destination: 3960m, 10 Kms, 6-7 Hours walk.

Day 4: Ascent from Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp. High of destination: 3960m, 8 Kms, 6-7 Hours walk.

Day 5: Ascent from Barafu Camp, summit Uhuru Peak then descent to Mweka Camp. High of destination: 5895m, 19 Kms, 12-14 Hours walk.

Day 6: Descent from Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate. High of destination: 1830m, 10 Kms, 5-6 Hours walk.

RONGAI ROUTE

Why Rongai Route:

  • Minimum of days to be trekked is 5 days
  • Accommodation is Camping
  • Possibility of seeing wildlife
  • Acclimatization is poor, due to 5 days climb
  • People traffic is moderate
  • Price is low to mid-range

Recommended:

  • 6 Days or 7 Days climb for better acclimatization, increase success rate and camp Kikelelwa and Mawenzi Tarn Hut.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Drive to Nalemoru Rongai Gate, begin ascent to Simba Camp. High of destination: 2625m, 8 Kms, 3-4 Hours walk.

Day 2: Ascent from Simba Camp to Kikelelwa Camp. High of destination: 3679m, 8 Kms, 5-6 Hours walk.

Day 3: Ascent from Kikelelwa Camp to Kibo Hut Camp. High of destination: 4730m, 6 Kms, 5-6 Hours walk.

Day 4: Ascent from Kibo Hut Camp, summit Uhuru Peak then descent to Horombo Hut Camp. High of destination: 5895m, 21 Kms, 12-14 Hours walk.
